Peru's defense minister on Saturday reported a second ambush against troops in a region known for coca production and lingering rebel activity.
Defense Minster Antero Flores-Araoz said only two soldiers returned after their patrol was attacked Thursday in the Apurimac-Ene River Valley of southeastern Peru.
Flores-Araoz told Canal N Saturday that it was not clear how many were in the patrol. He said information was still "confusing, incomplete and contradictory."
Peru's joint military command said a separate ambush in the same area Thursday killed one soldier, wounded three and left two missing.
Military officials suspected the attacks were carried out by remnants of Peru's Shining Path rebel group.
