Twelve Portuguese army officers left Wednesday for Beirut, Lebanon, to join the UN-led peacekeeping force UNIFIL in reconstruction missions, officials said. The group, part of a military unit of 140 construction engineers, will set up camp for the rest of the force, expected to join them by the end of the month. They will help in efforts to rebuild infrastructure left damaged by the recent conflict between Hizbullah and Israel in southern Lebanon. The Portuguese unit will be based in Shama, six kilometers (3.7 miles) northeast of the city of Naqoura, where UNIFIL has its headquarters.
