United States, Iranian, and foreign officials said Tuesday that Iran hopes to enter into talks with the US on the escalating international crisis surrounding its nuclear enrichment program, The Washington Post reported.
While the US is known in Iran as the "Great Satan," Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the first move towards direct relations between the two countries when he sent a letter to President George W. Bush some three weeks ago. The letter was endorsed by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
