Somalia battles kill at least 11, including child

A land mine in Somalia's capital killed an eight-year-old girl and fighting in the center of the country killed at least 10 people on Friday. The girl's uncle Ahmed Dahir Ugaas said the blast appeared to be targeting African Union peacekeepers in Mogadishu, but killed only his niece as she was walking nearby. Witnesses in the central Somali village of Wabha said fighting there between rival Islamist groups killed at least 10 people. Insurgents are trying to topple Somalia's Western-backed government, but they also are fighting among themselves for power. Recent bloodshed has been fueled by the arrival of radicalized foreign fighters who experts fear could use Somalia as a base for terror.
