Sri Lanka's military said that 120 Tamil Tiger rebels and 27 soldiers have been killed in a latest battle for the control of the insurgents' de facto capital in the north.
The military said in a statement that its troops have destroyed rebel defenses and breached huge earth barriers Sunday and were moving toward the rebel headquarters in Kilinochchi.
The military said rebels have counterattacked at several points, sparking fierce battles that killed 120 guerrillas and 27 soldiers.
Rebel officials could not be contacted for comment.
