Suspected Maoist rebels kill 10 policemen in India

About 100 suspected Maoist rebels shot and killed 10 police officers Monday in eastern India, police said. The officers were gunned down during a religious function in a district in southern Bihar state where the rebels are prevalent, said senior police official S.K. Bhardwaj. Authorities suspect Maoist rebels were responsible for the attack and an investigation was under way, Bhardwaj said. The rebels, known as Naxalites after the village where the movement was founded, frequently target police and government officials. The shooting occurred about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Patna, the capital of Bihar.
