Tamil protest blocks area of Paris; police arrest 60 demonstrators

Hundreds of demonstrators blocked an intersection in central Paris on Monday, in a protest demanding that Sri Lanka to end its military assault on Tamil-held areas. An estimated 500 people blocked the intersection late Monday afternoon, and police said they made some 60 arrests as groups of protesters threw projectiles at Paris city buses and at police. Sri Lankan troops have threatened a final assault on rebel Tamil Tigers, who are fighting to create an independent homeland for ethnic Tamils. The offensive in northern Sri Lanka has lasted several months. In the last month, similar demonstrations by Sri Lankans have taken place around Europe, with 2,000 protesters in the streets of London on Monday.
