Turkish warplanes hit Kurd rebel targets in Iraq

Turkish warplanes struck Kurdish rebel targets overnight in northern Iraq, the Turkish military said on Thursday. According to a military statement, Air Force jets bombed targets in the Iraqi border regions of Zap and Avasin-Basyan on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Hours earlier 10 Turkish soldiers were killed in two separate attacks suspected of being launched by Kurdish rebels. Turkish warplanes have often targeted rebel hideouts in northern Iraq from where guerrillas have staged hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets for decades. The Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, has been fighting for self-rule in Turkey's southeast since 1984.
