UK to withdraw troops from Iraq within 2.5 years

The commander of the British armed forces in Iraq revealed on Tuesday that Great Britain planned on withdrawing all of its troops from Iraq within two-and-a-half years. He said that the first phase of the pullout would begin already in a few weeks. In an interview to The Daily Telegraph, he emphasized that the withdrawal would only occur if a security calm would prevail. Britain currently has approximately 8,000 troops in Iraq, most of whom are stationed in Basra.
