UNSC draft calls for 'cessation of hostilities'

The United States and France reached agreement Saturday on a UN Security Council resolution aimed at ending the fighting between Israel and Lebanese Hizbullah guerrillas, US Ambassador John Bolton said. The resolution's draft calls for a "full cessation" of fighting between Israel and Lebanese Hizbullah guerrillas, but would allow Israel to defend itself if attacked. A copy of the draft, obtained by The Associated Press, "calls for a full cessation of hostilities based upon, in particular, the immediate cessation by Hizbullah of all attacks and the immediate cessation by Israel of all offensive military operations." The resolution was likely to be adopted in the next couple of days, Bolton said.
