US Senate panel endorses Susan Rice for UN post

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is endorsing Susan Rice as the next ambassador to the United Nations. The committee approved on Wednesday her nomination by voice vote. The action paves the way for her confirmation by the full Senate. A Senate vote had not been immediately scheduled. Rice is considered a shoo-in for the position. Once confirmed, she would become the first black American woman to assume the post and would report directly to President Barack Obama as a member of his Cabinet. Last week, Rice told the Senate committee she would work to strengthen the United Nations as "an indispensable if imperfect" institution.
