Yemen wants Arab cooperation to fight piracy

A senior Yemeni diplomat said Arab countries on the Red Sea should increase their cooperation to combat piracy in the Horn of Africa. Yemeni Deputy Foreign Minister Ali al-Ayashi's remarks come a day before Arab officials meet in Cairo try to forge a strategy to fight piracy and review proposals for a joint Arab naval force. Al-Ayashi said the foreign fleets in the area, including coalition of warships from eight nations, as well as NATO and the US Navy patrolling the Gulf of Aden leading to the Suez Canal, are doing little to curb piracy. Senior diplomats from Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan and the Arab League will take part in the one-day meeting.
