NATO chief says the alliance must engage with Iran

NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer says the alliance must engage with Iran to secure regional support for the escalating war in Afghanistan. Speaking Monday to a Brussels-based think-tank, the NATO chief said Western nations should include other regional players in the search for political stability in Afghanistan. The surprise call from the head of the Western alliance came as US President Barack Obama plans to send 30,000 additional troops into Afghanistan, where Taliban militants are resurgent and violence is rising.
