The UN Security Council is reportedly unlikely to consider new Iran sanctions until September. In a report Friday, Reuters, citing top European diplomats, said Western powers were backing down from their insistence that the Security Council consider the third set of sanctions since December. This was because, although Iran insists on enriching uranium, it has agreed to provide fuller disclosure of past actions and allow greater access for weapons inspectors to its enrichment plant, the report said. Additionally, Russia is strongly resisting such sanctions and western powers are embroiled in negotiations over the Darfur crisis, the Iraq war and independence for Kosovo.
