Iran's government is promising small and medium-sized German companies protection of their investments in the Middle Eastern country, deputy foreign minister Mehdi Safari told Financial Times Deutschland in an interview Monday.
"We will give them guarantees for their investments," Safari said, without being more specific.
As first reported in The Jerusalem Post, German investments in Iran last month came under fire when engineering company Steiner Group won a contract to build three liquid natural gas facilities in Iran.
The deal sparked criticism from Israel, indicating permission for Steiner to export the facilities may breach United Nations sanctions. But the German government said petrochemical facilities are not affected by the sanctions.
But Safari told FT Deutschland there are still opportunities for trade with Iran without drawing criticism from the international community.
