Aharonovitch nixes deploying IDF troops to patrol east Jerusalem
Public security minister expects his Yisrael Beytenu party to increase its mandate in new elections.

It would be a mistake to use IDF troops in east Jerusalem to support police patrols and help improve the security situation, Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said Tuesday.Aharonovitch said on a tour of the city that the security situation in Jerusalem is improving and there is an ongoing decrease in violent incidents in the capital. Nevertheless, extra police units that have been deployed in the city in recent months must stay on patrol for the time being.He also said that he has approved a wide-ranging new plan to beef up security in the city, and hopes to bring it to the cabinet for approval soon.Asked whether he expects to retain his post in the upcoming elections, he said that he doesn’t know, but that it’s best to wait and see.He said he expects his Yisrael Beytenu party to increase its mandate.Regarding the appointment of a new police commissioner to replace Insp.-Gen. Yochanan Danino, he said the choice would be made by the end of the year, in keeping with a decision reached along with the attorney-general.
