The board of directors of American Friends of Magen David Adom has unanimously appointed David M. Frankel chief executive officer.AFMDA National Chairman Mark Lebow commented that Frankel “brings an extraordinary history of leadership, unsurpassed financial expertise and a passion for Jewish philanthropy.” In his first major move, Frankel chose Catherine Reed as the organization’s chief development officer.Frankel, who has served as AFMDA’s interim CEO since October, was commissioner of the New York City Department of Finance from 2009 to 2013.More recently, he was executive director and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty.Frankel takes over for Arnold Gerson, who left the organization in October.MDA is Israel’s national ambulance, blood services and first-aid and disaster relief organization.AFMDA partners in MDA’s work by funding a wide variety of emergency vehicles, a new national blood center, critically needed medical supplies and rigorous emergency medical technician training.Frankel said AFMDA is among the fastest-growing Jewish nonprofit organizations in the US, experiencing a 200 percent increase in fund-raising revenue since 2011.
