This week in Israel Premier League action, Ashdod SC took a huge step toward staving off relegation by thrashing Maccabi Petah Tikva 3-0 at the Moshava Stadium.
With only two matches remaining, the port city side is now just two points away from Maccabi Petah Tikva a three behind Ironi Kiryat Shmona with its Premier League lives hanging in the balance.
Dan Bitton sent a beauty of a chip to Sagiv Yehezkel, who in turn sent the ball to Dean David to give Ashdod a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
Yehzekel himself found the back of the goal 11 minutes later while an Omer Danino own-goal in the 48th minute sewed up the victory.
Next week Ashdod visits Beitar Jerusalem and Petah Tikva travels to Hapoel Haifa.
Meanwhile, Haim Silvas won his first game in charge of Hapoel Haifa as the Carmel Reds defeated Bnei Sakhnin 2-1 at Doha Stadium. With the loss, Sakhin moved closer to officially being relegated to the Leumit League.
Beitar Jerusalem traveled up to Kiryat Shmmona and took home a 1-0 win thanks to a magnificent Ofir Kriaf 49th-minute tally.
Nir Klinger returned to the Beitar bench for the victory after being sidelined with a medical issue.
Hapooel Ra’anana ensured that it will play in the Premier League next season after defeating Hapoel Tel Aviv 2-1, which will have to wait another week to secure its top-tier spot.
Nir Lax scored in the 16th minute thanks to an Orel Dagani cross to give Kobi Refuah’s squad a 1-0 advantage, but Ra’anana found the equalizer in the 56th minute as Kayes Ganem scored from 12 meters out, and then took the lead six minutes later as Ido Levi put home Or Dasa’s free kick to grab the three points.
Tel Aviv will look to pick up points next week when it hosts Bnei Sakhnin in order to remain in the top division next season.
Elsewhere, Maccabi Tel Aviv needed a 95th-minute header from Dor Peretz to defeat pesky Hapoel Hadera 1-0 in Netanya.
Dor Micha recorded his 12th assist of the season when he sent Peretz a pinpoint cross in the box as Maccabi continued its undefeated league season. With only four matches remaining Vladimir Ivic’s squad will look to make history.
Also, Maccabi Netanya defeated Hapoel Beersheba 2-0 in the southern capital to into third place, while Bnei Yehuda and Maccabi Haifa played to a 2-2 draw at the Moshava Stadium.
