Astros extend Jewish star Bregman for $100 million

Alex Bregman is set up and locked up long term.The Houston Astros and their All-Star Jewish third baseman have agreed to a five-year, $100 million contract. It will cover his three years of arbitration-eligibility and the first two seasons he could become a free agent.The deal represents the largest contract signed by any Jewish athlete in any sport.The Astros won the World Series in Bregman’s first full season in 2017. He hit four home runs and drove in 10 runs in 18 games that postseason.Bregman, who turns 25 on March 30, authored one of the best seasons in Astros history in 2018, winning the team’s first-All-Star Game MVP and hitting a major league-high 51 doubles. He finished fifth in the American League MVP voting while batting .286, along with 31 homers, 103 RBIs and 105 runs scored.The No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 draft, Bregman has batted .282 with 58 homers, 103 doubles, 208 RBIs and 224 runs in 361 career games.The move does give Bregman the opportunity for another mega contract in the future. By the time his new deal is over, Bregman will be 30 years old. If he can continue to produce like a superstar, he’ll have plenty of suitors on the free-agent market.Until then, Bregman will help deliver on a promise he made shortly after the Astros won the World Series in 2017. While the city of Houston was still celebrating the win, Bregman promised “a lot of these.”He’ll have plenty of time to come through on that promise now.
