Cinematic reality

Anyone who feels that truth is stranger than fiction can head to the 17th Docaviv International Film Festival, which runs from May 7-16 at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. The showcase for local and international documentary filmmaking features films that look at all aspects of the human experience. There will be screenings all over Tel Aviv and special events throughout the festival. Docaviv is organized by Docaviv-NPO for the Promotion of Documentary Film. The festival's program includes an Israeli competition, an international competition, a student film competition and a new culture and art competition. Some of the Israeli films competing include Claudia Levin's Levinsky, which follows the tenants that occupied the “Levinsky camp” during the social protest of summer 2011; Itzik Lerner's God's Messengers, which looks at “hilltop youth” located at Gilad Farm outpost; Mor Loushy's Censored Voices, which unearths previously heavily redacted interviews with soldiers who fought in the 1967 Six Day War. There will also be documentaries about Israeli artists including playwright Nissim Aloni, singer Matti Caspi and poet Dalia Rabinovitch.
