Hol Hamoed is just not long enough for us to get to all the concerts on offer in this beautiful, musical country of ours. In a week packed with cultural events, Jerusalem had on offer two quality musical performances on one evening. I had to be choosy and, oh boy, did I choose well! Shimon Peres once remarked that Dudu Fisher is Israel’s best export. He might have completed the sentence by saying Colin Schachat is Israel’s best import.I have followed Fisher since the late 1970s when he became the young hazan (cantor) of the Berea shul in Johannesburg, South Africa. Having witnessed many of his superb concerts, I found the concert he gave together with Schachat to be without a doubt the finest aural experience I’ve had the pleasure of attending.Their repertoire, backed by the quality of the 50-piece Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Tomer Addadi, included a vast array of songs from all over the world, including Broadway hits, hazanut classics, opera in many languages, and even a rendition by the King of Rock, Elvis Presley. The non-stop applause by the packed theater as reward for the duo exemplified this magical performance, signifying it as “the perfect musical evening.”I’m sure that even the famous football manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who is known to be stingy with his compliments, would have labeled these musical marvels as “pure world class.”I cannot wait for the duo’s next concert.
