‘Mr. Gaga’ dances across the USA

The Heymann brothers' acclaimed documentary, Mr. Gaga, a portrait of Ohad Naharin, the Batsheva Dance Company's artistic director, will be opening throughout the US in early February. On January 30, there will be a festive screening at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with producer Barak Heymann, Naharin and Batsheva dancers. The screening will precede an engagement by the Batsheva troupe at BAM, which will run from February 1-4. On February 1 the movie will open in New York at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center at Lincoln Center and at the Film Forum. Mr. Gaga was just shown in a sold-out screening at the New York Jewish Film Festival. On February 8 there will be a pre-release screening in Los Angeles with director Tomer Heymann at Dance Camera West. On February 10, the film will open at the Laemmle's Playhouse 7, Monica Film Center and Town Center Encino in Los Angeles and other theaters throughout California. It will open in theaters in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Seattle, Washington in February. It will also be screened at film festivals all over the US. In March, the film will open in Canada. The movie, which has won awards at film festivals all over the world, looks at the life of the quintessentially Israeli and internationally acclaimed choreographer. It details Naharin's kibbutz childhood, his military service in an army entertainment troupe, his years studying and performing with dance companies in New York, his marriage to the late dancer Mari Kajiwara and his tenure at Batsheva, where he has choreographed works that have won rave reviews and turned the company into one of the premiere dance troupes in the world. Mr. Gaga features candid interviews with Naharin and his dancers, as well as home movies and rare performance footage. The Heymann brothers combed through thousands of hours of film and photos and spent years documenting the company's performances, rehearsals and classes to dissect Naharin's Gaga technique, a method of teaching and moving. The film, which opened in Israel in 2015, has broken the audience record for a documentary, with more than 120,270 viewers here.
