Palestinian actor cast to play Shylock in Shakespeare's 'Merchant of Venice'
Khoury is the first non-Jew to win the prestigious Israel Prize for a distinguished acting career.

London theatregoers who plan to take in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s latest production of The Merchant of Venice are in for quite a surprise when they discover that the actor cast to play Shylock is a Palestinian.According to a report in the British Telgraph, Makram Khoury, the first non-Jew to win the prestigious Israel Prize for a distinguished acting career that has spanned over 50 years, will make his debut at the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon on May 14.Khoury, a native Jerusalemite, hails from a Christian family. He spent his childhood in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon. His resume includes an appearance on the hit television series West Wing as well as a role in Steven Spielberg’s thriller Munich.Khoury was the subject of controversy after he was cast to play a Holocaust survivor in the Israeli film Magic Men.
