Two alternative rock mavens of the ’90s who are as fond of Israel as their Israeli fans are of them are returning for early 2015 shows.The Afghan Whigs rocked Tel Aviv’s Barby Club for two sold-out shows as part of their comeback tour in 2012, and they’re booked for the same venue on February 24.A true band of the ’90s – with six albums and EPs released between 1990 and 1998, when they imploded – the Whigs set themselves apart from their alternative rock brethren by focusing on leader Greg Dulli’s angst-filled lyrics and incorporating nuanced rhythmic suppleness into their music, that fused post-punk grunge with soul and R&B-inflected grooves.Dulli has appeared in Israel a number of times with his projects The Twighlight Singers and with The Gutter Twins, his collaboration with former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan.The prolific Lanegan is another perennial visitor to Israel in his post-Trees persona. Whether on his six diverse solo albums, his frequent collaborations with Dulli, his Nick Cave-Kylie Minogue partnership with ex-Belle & Sebastian vocalist Isobel Campbell or his wailing as a ground-floor member of alt-hard rock heroes Queens of the Stone Age, Lanegan has created an oeuvre that takes listeners into a netherworld of cobwebs and reflection.The Mark Lanegan Band returns to Tel Aviv also at the Barby Club on March 23.
