1. THE HEALING POWER OF TREES
In the film Sea of Trees, an American professor travels to Japan in the midst of a personal crisis. As he wanders through a mysterious forest with a dark past, he experiences flashbacks of his fraught but loving relationship with his wife and meets an enigmatic stranger, who is lost and injured. After saving the stranger, the two embark on a spiritual, lifechanging journey of friendship, discovery and healing. With Matthew McConaughey, Naomi Watts, Ken Watanabe.
2. CORPORATE ESPIONAGE
In the film The Accountant, a math savant works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division closing in, he takes on a legitimate client: a robotics company where an accounting clerk discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as he gets closer to the truth, the body count starts to rise. With Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick.
3. SACRED MUSIC
The Jerusalem Academy of Music’s chamber choir, led by its artistic director and conductor Stanley Sperber (in the photo), will perform Brahms’s German Requiem as part of the Abu Ghosh Vocal Music Festival. Also on the program are two Jewish sacred a cappella works: Elohim Hashivenu by Italian composer Salomone Rossi and Elohei Zidki by Paul Ben-Haim. 4. YEFIM BRONFMAN AND THE IPO
The Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra opens its 81st season with a series of concerts conducted by Yaron Gottfried, with pianist Yefim Bronfman, soprano Sunhae Im, mezzo-sopranos Julia Rutigliano and Shahar Lavi, tenor Michael Schade, bass Johannes Stermann and The Prague Philharmonic Choir. On the program are Noam Sheriff’s Akeda (The Sacrifice of Isaac), Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Bach’s Magnificat. 5. NATURAL BEAUTY
The Israel Nature and Parks Authority presents an exhibition of stunning photographs taken by employees of the authority who document their daily work in Israel’s nature reserves. Until October 24 at Gan Afek National Park near the lake.
6. MODERN CLASSICS
Boris Eifman and his dancers return to Israel with two programs that have won acclaim here and abroad: Red Giselle, Eifman’s modern version of the classic ballet Giselle; and Up & Down (based on the novel Tender Is the Night), which was enthusiastically received here on the company’s most recent visit. 7. DANCING IN THE MARKET
From Jaffa to Agrippas streets, a dance event at the Mahaneh Yehuda Market is held by Jerusalem’s c.a.t.a.m.o.n Dance Group. The group brings together 12 leading choreographers for three days, performing nine premieres. The performances will take place at seven local bars: The Shchena; Dwini Pita Bar; Casino de Paris; Freddy Lemon; Bala and Hazalmaniya. October 30 to November 1, from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. in Jerusalem.
8. CONCERT OF THE CONTRATENOR
The Tel Aviv Soloists Ensemble opens its season with a concert dedicated to the contratenor, with world-renowned singer Andreas Scholl (Germany). On the program are works by Bach, Vivaldi, Arvo Part and English folk songs. October 29 at 8:30 at the Rappaport Auditorium, Haifa; October 30 at 8:30 p.m. at the Einav Center, Tel Aviv.
9. HEAVENLY VOICES
The Gregorian all-male vocal ensemble will debut in Israel with one female soloist, Amelia Brightman, as part of their international tour Live! The eight singers and five musicians, all dressed as monks, have been entertaining audiences around the world for the past 10 years, performing their special Gregorian takes on pop and rock classics. 10. HIGH SPIRITED, EXCITING AND AUTHENTIC
The Brazilian dance company Bale de Rua (Street Dance) that has been wowing audiences worldwide, is making its Israeli debut. Exploding onto the international scene in 2002, Bale de Rua was founded by three friends from the impoverished favelas of Uberlandia.
