“Most of the public is moderate,” said Polly Bronstein, head of the organization Darkenu. As such, her organization works to bring moderate Israelis together to create one, strong moderate voice and force.“Our movement has more than 300,000 supporters, and as we approach elections, we are calling for the establishment of a broad and moderate coalition that will push out the extremist forces and reduce their power,” Bronstein told an audience of hundreds at Wednesday’s Jerusalem Post Election Conference. “It is very important that there be an ideological and pure Left and Right in Israel, but that those who have to manage the country are moderate, responsible and state-minded.”Darkenu aspires toward a State of Israel led by a government that believes in Israel as the national home for the Jewish people and a democratic state for all its citizens. It also is working to achieve social and economic justice, equal opportunities and civil solidarity, and to eradicate racism and discrimination in all its forms.Bronstein praised former Likud minister Gideon Sa’ar, who also spoke at the conference, and said that while Sa’ar might not yet realize it, “he will sit more comfortably in the government with Blue and White and the Labor Party than in a unified government of extreme right-wing parties.“In order to restore public trust in the country and trust between the two camps – and in order to legitimize the government among the majority of the Israeli public – the moderate forces on the Right and on the Left must lead the country in a coalition of parties that connect us rather than divide and polarize us,” she said.
