The ceremony at Isfiya Military Cemetery, where 90 Druze IDF soldiers are buried, is meant to commemorate those Druze soldiers who were fallen soldiers or victims of terrorism. While military service is not mandatory for Druze, many choose to serve.
The Druze community threatened to boycott the event because Likud Druze MK Ayoub Kara is scheduled to speak and serve a representative for the Druze community, according to the report. Many bereaved families have voiced their concern because of Kara's public support for the Nation-State Law. The Druze groups demanded a different senior official or civilian representative who will express their distress with the basic law.
The Druze opinion on the Nation-State Law has been mixed, with many Druze leaders outraged by the law.
"Minister Shaked is responsible for enacting the racist and despicable Nation-State law that makes us, the Druze and the minorities in Israel, second class citizens," Druze MK Saleh Sa'ad wrote in January.
