Since 1993 the United Nations marked World Water Day to promote public awareness to the important of water and conservation of water resources.
The Jewish National Fund gathered five facts about Israel and water for this special day.
1. Not only 60% of the country a desert, Israel now enjoys only half the amount of rain it had when it was founded in 1948.
2. Not only is Israel leading the world in water recycling, it is able to recycle 85% of its water. The closest country, Spain at second place, recycles 17%.
3. Israel had been under an ongoing drought since 2014. While Israel was able to secure drinking water, agriculture is an ongoing issue.

4. Half of the water Israel uses for agriculture comes from 250 reservoirs.
5. Israel provides water not only to its own citizens, it also gives water to the Palestinian authority and Jordan.

Around the world people marked World Water day. Astronaut Scott Kelly tweeted a picture of the Earth saying "let's do our part to conserve it and keep it clean."
