Magen David Adom paramedics and medics will be on hand Friday to deal with emergencies when the Jerusalem Marathon is held -- just as it did when the Tel Aviv Marathon took place earlier this month. Tens of thousands of runners are expected to participate.

Last year, MDA personnel and volunteers treated dozens of runners who felt unwell during the Jerusalem Marathon.

The Jerusalem Marathon is considered more difficult than than in usually hotter Tel Aviv because of the hilly topography of the capital that requires more exertion than in flat Tel Aviv.

The race will begin at 6.45 a.m. in Sderot Ruppin and continue for various distances -- the full marathon of 42.2 kilometers, the half marathon at 21.2 kilometers and shorter races of 10, five  1.7 and 0.8 kilometers.

Among the urgent medical conditions that need treatment are hyperthermia, injuries, heart attacks and a sudden drop in blood sugar. Ambulances, mobile intensive care units, ambucycles and other equipment will be on hand, in addition to a tent clinic that will be erected in Sderot Ben-Zvi’s Sacher Park. Plastic pools of water for cooling off victims of overheating will also be available if necessary.

Some 20 MDA workers and volunteers will participate together in the half marathon.

MDA advised runners to eat a light breakfast about three hours before running. A tuna or egg sandwich, a plate of pasta or oatmeal made with hot water and a little honey is  recommended. Do not eat fruit or dairy products, as these may cause stomach discomfort. During the race, drink enough water; energy bars are also helpful, MDA said.
