Ma’aleh Adumim Mayor Benny Kashriel still believes he will succeed Natan Sharansky as chairman of the Jewish Agency, despite not making a short list of candidates Jewish leaders sent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Last month, the Post revealed that the list included Minister Yuval Steinitz; opposition leader Isaac Herzog; MK Nachman Shai; Consul-General Dani Dayan; Ambassador Ron Dermer and former ambassador Ron Prosor.Kashriel was chosen in 2015 as the candidate of World Likud, which was given the agency chairmanship as part of the coalition agreement in the World Zionist Organization. Netanyahu can choose any candidate and bring it to approval in the next Jewish Agency Board of Governors meeting in February.The American Jewish leaders were not seen as keen on choosing a settler leader for the post, though former Agency chairman Sallai Meridor lived in Kfar Adumim.Kashriel told The Jerusalem Post that he has spoken to people close to the prime minister who gave him hope of receiving the post.His chances received a boost on Thursday when Yediot Aharonot reported that Steinitz’s campaign in the 2012 Likud Knesset primary received contributions via Miki Ganor, the state’s witness in the “submarine affair.”The report stressed that there was no evidence that Steinitz was aware of the problematic origins of the contributions. But if he gets more embroiled in the investigations, Steinitz’s chances could be harmed.A WZO source said Kashriel should not give up hope.“He could be a nice backup plan,” the source said. “His chances are not high but they certainly are not zero.”
