Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will spend most of the intermediary days of Sukkot in New York attending the UN General Assembly meeting, his office announced on Monday.
The General Assembly, which always takes place in September, often conflicts with the Jewish holidays, but this is the first time in recent memory high-level discussions attended by many of the world’s leaders extends through the entirety of the intermediary days of Sukkot.
Netanyahu is scheduled to leave on Tuesday, September 25, the second day of Sukkot. It has not yet been determined when he will arrive in New York on Tuesday, which is a holy day for Jews in the Diaspora, but not for Jews living in Israel. He could potentially run into opposition from religious parties in his coalition if he flies into New York when it is still the holiday there.
Netanyahu is set to return on Saturday evening, September 29, immediately after Shabbat to get back in Israel before the onset of Simhat Torah, which begins Sunday evening, September 30.
Netanyahu will address the General Assembly, as he has done almost every year since taking office for the second time in 2009. He is also expected to meet US President Donald Trump, and numerous other world leaders on the sidelines of the gathering, though nothing has been formally announced yet.
