A wave of arrests were carried out overnight Saturday in the Negev city of Rahat, following a mass brawl earlier in the day in which a 16-year- old local, Salah-a-din Abu Abed was shot dead.Negev police said so far they have made 20 arrests, five of which are suspected of being involved in the shooting, including the suspected trigger man. The suspects arrested also include four minors.The arrests were carried out by a large contingent of police from across the southern district, including special patrol officers and police from the district’s “Yoav” special riot unit. In addition to the arrest raids, police have ordered officers to stay deployed in larger than usual numbers in the city for the time being in order to prevent further violence.The fatal shooting took place in the city’s “34” neighborhood during a brawl between two local Rahat families. Police who arrived at the scene reported being attacked by rock-throwers, as did firefighters who came to extinguish two house fires that started during the brawl. The firefighters were forced to flee and only returned after given a police escort.There have been feuds between local families in the past in Rahat, with the disputes erupting in violence, especially on the weekends.
