Police manhunt for suspect in Jerusalem stabbing attack centers around Old City

Police on Monday were yet to locate a suspect in the stabbing attack against a 32-year-old Jewish man in downtown Jerusalem on Sunday.
According to police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, the attack took place shortly after 6 p.m. on Hanevi’im Street, from which the suspect fled by foot toward Damascus Gate.
Rosenfeld said Monday that the search for the attacker, allegedly an Arab man who was believed to have nationalistic motives, was based on evidence provided by the victim.
Searches for the suspect were focusing both in the Old City and around the Old City, Rosenfeld said.
The victim, who sustained moderate wounds when he was stabbed in the back with a screwdriver, was recovering at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in the capital.
According to a statement from the hospital on Monday, he was in good condition and remained hospitalized for observation.
Hamas praised the stabbing on Sunday evening, calling it “a natural response to the crimes of the occupation,” according to Palestinian news site Al-Resalah.
The stabbing follows a spate of similar attacks that occurred on the same day last week in Tel Aviv and the West Bank, killing one woman and an IDF soldier.
