Israeli Educator and lecturer Miriam Peretz was pitched to join politics because it would "serve as a platform" for her to run for president once President Reuven Rivlin completes his term, Hadashot news reported on Sunday.
Party leaders Moshe Kahlon (Kulanu), Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) and Education Minister Naftali Bennett and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, leaders of The New Right, visited her for "extended periods of time" in her home in Givaat Zeev in an attempt to convince her to enter the political arena, the television station said.
Peretz was the recipient of the Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement in 2018 for her career as an educator on Zionism and lecturer on living with loss. She lost two sons during their respective army services, Lt. Uriel Peretz, 22, killed in an ambush in south Lebanon in 1998 and Maj. Eliraz Peretz, 31, killed near the Gaza border in 2010.
“Miriam Peretz has devoted her life to education and imparting the Jewish and Zionist heritage while conducting lectures to youth and soldiers,"the Israel Prize committee stated following the decision to award her the honor in March 2018. "Even to communities around the world in order to light our ways and strengthen our hands. Moreover, Miriam helps bereaved families and injured IDF soldiers.”
The committee continued: “Miriam is a symbol of the framework of the Jewish and Israeli spirit and is a symbol and an example of giving and helping others, society and the community.”
