President Reuven Rivlin on Tuesday condemned the recent spate of verbal assaults against Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked.Posting his condemnation on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Rivlin wrote that the hateful diatribe directed against Shaked is something not to be condoned, characterizing the nature of the verbal attacks as “violent and despicable” and declaring that such language has no place in Israeli society or the State of Israel.It’s not only permissible to argue, but one should argue, he wrote, adding that it’s possible to protest but not to degrade or be in contempt of a publicly elected official.When done by the educators of the public, it is especially intolerable, he said.Although Rivlin is in favor of a sharp public debate, he stipulated that it must be one in which the sides listen to and respect each other.“This is an obligation incumbent on all of us, on all sectors of Israeli society, without exception,” he wrote.
