Former Labor leader Shelly Yacimovich will oppose attempts by party chairman Isaac Herzog to postpone the next leadership race, she told Israel Radio Monday morning.Herzog’s associates have confirmed he is considering a move to delay the race that currently must be held by May 2016. Such a postponement could result in there being no race before the next general election.“I won’t support any maneuvers to move up or move back the race to prevent candidates from running,” she said. “I’m against such tricks.”Channel 10 reported Sunday night that Yacimovich’s former campaign manager, Ofer Cornfeld, had been meeting with Herzog’s advisers secretly in order to jointly set a date for the race. Yacimovich said she speaks to Herzog directly and publicly and did not have to do anything secret.Herzog’s attempt to postpone the race is seen as an attempt to preempt a run by an outsider, such as Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai or former IDF chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi.Huldai’s popularity will be tested at a pre-Rosh Hashana toast he will hold in his city Wednesday. It is possible that he will announce his political future at the event.Yacimovich welcomed the return to Labor of MK Amir Peretz, who left for Hatnua three years ago to protest her leadership of the party.Hatnua and Labor ran together as the Zionist Union in the March 17 election. Peretz has been pushing for the two parties to merge.
