Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan will appoint one of the current police commanders to replace Israel Police Commissioner Inspector-General Roni Alsheich, whose contract will not be renewed for a fourth year, Channel 2 reported Tuesday.
According to the report, Erdan has been in touch with legal officials about prospective candidates.
Due to past incidents of sexual improprieties by their predecessors, the police commanders were required to undergo prying lie detector tests. The polygraph tests revealed information that was embarrassing but not illegal.
The reason for Erdan’s caution is that before he selected Alsheich, he initially announced he would give the job to IDF Brig.-Gen. (res.) Gal Hirsch, an outsider who he said would clean up the police after a series of embarrassing incidents. But then a criminal investigation was opened against him.
Alsheich has clashed repeatedly during his term with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Likud Party figures.
The report said Erdan would also not renew the contract of the head of the Prison Service, Ofra Klinger, and she would also be replaced by a candidate from within the police.
Erdan’s office did not comment on the report.
