Police on Monday said they solved a brutal murder in Sderot last month, in which a local gang member was stabbed and beaten to death by attackers from a rival gang. The arrests were cleared for publication on Monday, ahead of an indictment on murder charges for the five suspects to be presented in a Beersheba court.
Police said that on the night of the murder, a group of suspects from a gang based in the Ashdod and Ashkelon area drove to Sderot looking to settle accounts with their rivals. They prowled around a local neighborhood looking for a member of the gang to kill, and finally, at around 11 p.m., they came across victim Michael Gazayev, who was at a small grocery store in the city.
Gazayev, an associate of the Sderot gang, was set upon, beaten and viciously stabbed by his attackers, as was a companion of his. Two employees of the store were also assaulted, police said.
Police were called to the scene after the suspects fled and found Gazayev lying outside the store, with stab wounds across his body and showing no signs of life.
Gazayev was pronounced dead at the scene, and police launched a special investigative unit to crack the murder.
The next day they said they found two suspects, who have remained in custody since. One of those suspects had recently finished serving a 16-year-sentence for manslaughter.
Three other suspects were arrested shortly afterward.
All five are expected to be indicted for crimes ranging from assault to murder.
