Basketball: Omri Casspi looks to make most of opportunity in Minnesota

Omri Casspi will have a chance to end one of the most frustrating seasons of his career on a sweet note after signing with Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday.The 28-year-old Israeli found himself without a team after being waived by the New Orleans Pelicans three weeks ago, just six days after joining the franchise and two days after breaking his right thumb during his debut.Casspi arrived in New Orleans with high hopes after leaving Sacramento as part of the DeMarcus Cousins trade. The forward looked to have quickly settled at his new team after scoring 12 points in just under 24 minutes on his debut, but what seemed like an innocuous blow to his right hand resulted in a broken thumb, an injury that was supposed to rule him out for between 4-to-6 weeks.With the short-handed Pelicans desperate for healthy bodies, they opted to release Casspi, but he recovered from the injury quicker than expected and has another opportunity to prove his worth ahead of a crucial summer in which he will once more be a free agent.Casspi has struggled with injuries throughout this season, averaging 5.9 points and 4.1 rebounds in just 22 games for Sacramento.Even when healthy, he disappeared from the rotation for stretches earlier this season after falling out of favor with Kings coach Dave Joerger.The short-handed Minnesota could use Casspi’s help, with Nemanja Bjelica being ruled out of action for the rest of the season last week after the Wolves had already lost Zach LaVine for the remainder of the campaign.Casspi won’t have long to impress in Minnesota, with the Wolves having only 13 games remaining in the regular season.The Wolves are still alive in the hunt for a playoff berth, but may not be for much longer, sitting in 12th place in the West, five games back of Denver in eighth.
