Dudi Sela couldn’t build on his first ATP Tour win of 2018, dropping to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 defeat to 20-year-old American Frances Tiafoe in the second round of the New York Open at Uniondale, Long Island on Thursday.
The 32-year-old Israeli began the year at No. 67 in the world, but dropped all the way to No. 100 earlier this week after suffering defeats in the opening rounds in Doha, Canberra and at the Australian Open in Melbourne to begin the year.
Sela finally got off the mark with a victory over Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round in Long Island, but he converted only one of nine break point against the talented Tiafoe (98) and was sent packing in the second round.
Elsewhere, Roger Federer closed to within a single win of reclaiming the world No. 1 ranking for the first time in more than five years after advancing to the quarterfinals of the ABN Amro World Tennis event in Rotterdam with a 7-6 (8), 7-5 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Progress to the semifinals will move the 36-year-old Federer ahead of Rafael Nadal in the ATP standings. Should the 20-times Grand Slam champion manage that he would become No. 1 for the first time since November 2012.
