Although he will only celebrate his 18th birthday next week, Israeli-South African Gev Sella has already made history, winning the Africa Eco Race in the motorcycle category following the final formality stage that took the competitors to Dakar in Senegal on Saturday. Africa Eco Race is an annual 12-stage, 6,500-kilometer desert marathon in the North of Africa, organized as an answer to the cancellation of the 2008 Dakar Rally, and the subsequent moving of the rally to South America. Contestants began the race on January 2 in Morocco and after five stages continued for six more stages in Mauritania before completing the course in Senegal. Sella, who rides a KTM motorcycle, was second on the final test of this years edition behind two-time defending champion Pal Anders Ullevalseter. But he won five of the 12 stages and ended the race 50 minutes and 12 seconds clear of Norway’s Ullevalseter.
