Israel’s Andrey Medvedev ended the vault final at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in the eighth and last position in the final day of competition in Cluj, Romania, on Sunday.Medvedev, who also qualified for the final from eighth place overall, will not want to remember much from his performance on Sunday. He didn’t even register a score in his first attempt after landing on his face rather than his feet. He recorded 13.466 in his second attempt, but with the overall score being an average of both jumps, that was only good enough for last place. The next goal for Medvedev, who was competing in his third vault final at the continental championships, is September’s World Championships in Montreal, Canada.Israel ended the championships in Cluj with a single bronze medal, courtesy of Alex Shatilov. The country’s greatest ever gymnast further improved his remarkable record at the event on Saturday, claiming a seventh career medal in the floor final. The 30-year-old was participating in his first major championship since his disappointing showing at the Rio Olympics last summer, mulling over the possibility of retirement before deciding to extend his career.Shatilov also claimed a bronze medal at the Europeans in Bern, Switzerland, last year and has only missed out on a place on the podium at the continental championships one time since 2008, finishing in fourth place in France in 2015.
