Palestinian rights center behind "wave of lawsuits" alleging war crimes committed against civilians.

Palestinian lawyers reportedly intend to file 936 lawsuits against Israel alleging that the country committed war crimes against Palestinian civilians during Operation Cast Lead in early 2009.
Some of the lawsuits will be taken to Spanish courts, the German magazine Der Spiegel reported Sunday. Israel is being accused, among other allegations, of shooting children at close range, burning women with white phosphorus bombs and burying entire families under rubble.
I'ad al-Alami, head of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, stands behind the initiative to produce a mass of lawsuits against Israel, the report stated. Alami represented Palestinians who sued Israel in the past and in some cases won compensation. He also represented Fatah members who were held by Hamas in jail and Hamas men held by Fatah.
Alami claims 1,417 people were killed during Operation Cast Lead, and says many of whom were civilians.
According to Der Spiegel, dozens of lawyers in Norway, Britain, New Zealand, Spain and Holland were preparing the files. But Alami's hopes hang mostly on the Spanish court which in recent months took up the case alleging that several top Israeli officials were guilty for the civilian casualties killed during the targeted assassination of Salah Shehadeh in Gaza in 2002.
