A Tel Aviv court on Thursday indicted a 29-year-old Givat Shmuel resident on charges of attempting to sexually assault a minor, kidnapping and false imprisonment. The alleged incident occurred only six months after the suspect was released from prison after serving 10 years on previous child sex crimes convictions.
The charges allege that the suspect, Moshe Morduff, followed a six-year-old girl home to her apartment in Bnei Brak and attempted to assault her in the building's elevator. The girl attempted to flee but Morduff reportedly barred her exit from the elevator and tried to drag her to the buildings basement. The girl's father heard her screams and rushed to the scene, where he held the suspect until police arrived.
Police said that Morduff confessed to the charges while under questioning, saying he tried to stop himself, but could not.
Morduff was originally convicted of a litany of child sex crimes in 2000 and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He would stalk girls in the neighborhoods in which they lived and lure them into the basements of buildings where he would rape them, earning him the nickname "the Basement Rapist".
He was released for good behavior after ten years, with a court order to stay out of close proximity of minors. He will also face charges of violating the conditions of his release.
