For three days, Rambam Medical Center imaging technology experts couldn't understand why its sophisticated positron-emission tomography (PET)/computerized tomography (CT) scanner was malfunctioning. They examined the computer and its software as well as the printed circuits and found nothing unusual. When technicians arrived to open it up to examine an internal switch, they found to their amazement a purring cat inside. The feline apparently turned off the internal switch and delayed the examinations of dozens of patients. Medical center director-general Prof. Rafael Beyar said the breakdown was serious and that the hospital had done much in the last two years to keep stray cats off campus to prevent such occurrences. It was not known whether the cat was exposed to excessive radiation.
