Conflicting reports over progress on talks to end university strike

Conflicting reports over progress in negotiations between the Finance Ministry and the Senior Lecturers Union (SLU) provided a hazy prediction as to whether the nearly three-month-long university strike would come to an end on Sunday. While the SLU announced on Thursday night that it had accepted Histadrut Labor Federation head Ofer Eini's compromise proposal to end the lecturers strike, and that a solution could be found as early as Thursday night, Finance Ministry officials said that the late-night talks had come to a dead end after several lecturers rejected the offer. The SLU had taken Eini's proposal to a late night negotiating session with Finance Minister Ronnie Bar-On and senior Treasury officials, in an attempt to save the fall university semester.
