Environmental Protection Ministry warns tire importers to recycle

The Environmental Protection Ministry has sent warning letters to 46 import companies demanding they properly recycle old tires, the ministry announced Tuesday. If the companies do not adhere to the goals of the program (85% of all old tires by 2013), then they will be fined. All told, fines on all of the companies would reach nearly NIS 37 m. The Tire Law went into effect in 2007 requiring proper recycling of tires rather than dumping them in landfills. The year after the law went into effect 22,307 tons out of 48,366 were collected. There is only one company in Israel which specializes in recycling tires: Eco-Tire E&G which was established in 2008.
