A 19-year-old woman from Haifa, who was being held in custody in Ecuador on suspicion of drug-related felonies, died in mysterious circumstances Sunday. The young woman was arrested several days ago at the airport in Ecuador together with another young Israeli. Police accused the two of trying to smuggle drugs out of the country. The young woman was found unconscious in her cell and was evacuated to a nearby hospital, where she died. Police have not ruled out that she may have been murdered in her jail cell. Local police reported the death to the Israeli Embassy in Quito, which notified the woman's family in Haifa. The embassy was working to arrange the body's return to Israel. Less than two months ago, an Israeli backpacker was killed in a road accident near the Ecuadorian capital. Guy Shatmer, 23 from Rishon Lezion, had been hit by a car while riding his bicycle. Shatmer was buried in Israel.
