Just as seven-year-old Leon Kalnatrovwas being laid to rest around midday Sunday in Ashdod, news of another murder case surfaced when 28-year-old Sergei Kolsnikov was found dead in Rishon Lezion.
Kolsnikov's stabbed body was found in his bed by his mother.
The victim's mother was subsequently arrested on suspicion of involvement in the crime after signs of violence were found on her face, Army Radio reported. The woman asserted that she was sexually assaulted by the tenant who was renting a room in the family's home, the report said. Police were conducting a search for the man and looking into the mother's version of events.
Magen David Adom paramedics pronounced the 28-year-old dead at the scene on Rehov Ayin Hakoreh, and police launched an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
Police said he had no record of involvement in crime.
The investigation has been taken over by the Central Police District's Central Unit. Police have obtained a court-imposed media ban for 30 days, prohibiting publication of findings from the crime scene, details on the suspects, and information on the stab victim.
In other violence, a homeless man was killed at the Kalderon beach in Bat Yam, apparently in a scuffle between several homeless people overnight Saturday, police said.
Police arrested five homeless people on suspicion of being connected with the man's death. The man's identity was unknown.
On Sunday morning, meanwhile, the body of a 35-year-old man bearing signs of violence was found in an abandoned building in the city.
