Mulner, top police target, indicted

Amir Mulner was indicted on Tuesday at the Nazereth District Court for obstruction of justice, arms possession, assuming a false identity, and planning to commit a violent crime. The courts extended his remand by two days according to police request. He and three others were arrested by Northern police just over a week ago after the vehicle in which they were traveling was stopped and the device found. The other people were Mulner's two body guards and a member of the Karaja family, another suspected crime group, police said. Last month, Mulner was stabbed in the Daniel Hotel in Herzliya during an 'underworld summit' in which the participants had gathered to discuss future cooperation with each other. Also on Tuesday, another indictment was given to the five people who were arrested at the end of last month before they could assassinate alleged crime boss Assi Abutbol. The suspects include 33 year-old Amit Tyeb, who was once accused of trying to kill another alleged crime boss, Zev Rosenstein, and 51-year old Avner Harari, who is a released prisoner. The other three were David Avraham, Nir Dabah and Avraham Cohen. Petah Tikva Magistrate's court has extended the custody of the five suspects until Wednesday. Abutbol has been the target of a number of attempts on his life, and on Sunday, police said a light anti-tank weapon (LAW) was found next to his home in Netanyah. At the end of December, a LAW landed on the street in front of Abutbol's home as he pulled into an underground parking lot. An attempt was also made on his life in August 2004. The latest developments took place a day after the first meeting of a high-level committee charged with fighting organized crime. The participants, who included police chief Insp.-Gen. Moshe Karadi and Attorney General Menahem Mazuz, agreed to set up an "Intelligence Situation Room" in order to improve cooperation and the sharing of information between the various organizations that fight crime.
